LA Philanthropy Watch
LA Philanthropy Watch is an online newsletter / blog with news, links, and perspectives on the nonprofit and voluntary sector in Los Angeles – plus broader issues, public policies, and politics related to the sector. Issues related to social change and social justice are also represented (including many posts, news links, and videos on the national debate on health care reform and, more recently, features about financial reform). I hope to illuminate, to inform, and to put things into perspective.
Although the focus is chiefly on 501(c)(3) organizations, I regard voluntary associations (which Tocqueville wrote about more than 170 years ago) – whether or not they are officially sanctioned 501(c)(3)s – and volunteer-led groups within the public sector (such as the neighborhood councils active throughout the City of Los Angeles) as within the scope of LA Philanthropy Watch.
LA Philanthropy Watch – 2010 Edition:
LA Philanthropy Watch is phasing out in summer 2010. I invite readers to check out a new blog, Civic Intersection.
One of my new year’s resolutions, related to LA Philanthropy Watch, was to focus more relentlessly on local stories – including features that require a bit more original reporting (not just links and commentary). I have tried to offer context and elucidation that big media may not take time to illustrate.
Finally, regarding my intended audience: In contrast to most philanthropic blogs (and a number of past posts on this blog), I intend to write with a general readership in mind, rather than for nonprofit executives, professional fund raisers, or others with careers in the field. I will not be highlighting tips and techniques – or teasers about my areas of professional expertise – on development, campaign planning, or building better boards. I expect my general readers to include volunteers and activists, donors and prospective donors, and other folks with a hands-on interest in their communities.
