Forbes’ List of Most Generous Billionaires
Andrew Carnegie (pictured), who spent the last two decades of his life giving away his fortune for “public purposes,” derided men who made philanthropic contributions posthumously. “Men who leave vast sums in this way may fairly be thought men who would not have left it at all, had they been able to take it with them.”
On September 3, Charity Navigator linked to a Forbes’ list of the world’s most generous billionaires – 14 philanthropists (alive and well) who have given away at least $1 billion dollars. Three are Californians:
Gordon Moore (of Woodside at #3), Herbert and Marion Sandler (of San Francisco at #7) and from Los Angeles – Eli Broad at #5.
The others: #1 Bill Gates; #2 George Soros; #4 Warren Buffett; #6 James Stowers; #8 Michael Bloomberg; #9 Li Ka-shing; #10 Dietmar Hopp; #11 Michael Dell; #12 Klaus Tschira; #13 Stephan Schmidheiny; and #14 Ted Turner.
