Community Foundations’ Assets Declined 27% in 2008

Charity Navigator reports on a survey showing that assets held by community foundations declined, on average, by 27% in 2008.  The Council on Foundations surveyed 200 community foundations with assets of at least $5 million.  (So far, at least, 2009 is shaping up as a better year.)

The California Community Foundation lost significant assets in 2008, while contributions declined even more sharply.  Nonetheless, CCF has stepped up its grantmaking in the past two years, as these figures from its website illustrate:

GRANTS

  • 2006 – $94,408
  • 2007 – 245,487
  • 2008 – 220,064

Charity Navigator offers a link to its ratings of community foundations.  The California Community Foundation earned Four Stars – as did the seven other California community foundations on the list: Community Foundation Sonoma County, East Bay Community Foundation, Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego, Orange County Community Foundation, San Diego Foundation, San Francisco Foundation, and Santa Barbara Foundation.  (Here’s a link by state, with all the California community foundations clustered together.)
