Board of Supervisors Approves New MLK Partnership

The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved the partnership with the University of California to resurrect Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital (as reported by Molly Hennessy-Fiske in this morning’s Los Angeles Times).

On November 19, the Regents of the University of California approved the partnership, which creates a new nonprofit organization to run the new MLK hospital, a much needed medical facility in South Los Angeles.  The hospital,  scheduled to open in phases beginning in 2010, will feature an emergency room, three operating rooms, and clinical specialties catering to the needs of the community.  Additional details and links were previously reported in this blog.

The nonprofit will be overseen by a 7-member governing board, which is structured to minimize opportunities for political interference by the Board of Supervisors (as discussed in LA Philanthropy Watch).
